Organization's MISSION in the community:
Literacy Volunteers-Winchester Area provides individualized services that assist the people of Winchester City, Frederick County, and Clarke County in achieving their personal goals through literacy.
SERVICES provided in the community:
Projects/Programs:
Basic Adult Reading (BAR) - One-on-one tutorials are arranged for students who have limited reading abilities and those who seek to improve reading and comprehension skills. Tutors may assist with GED preparation and life skills.
English as a Second Language (ESL) - ESL provides language skills to residents for whom English is a second language. The ESL student population represents levels from beginning to advanced.
Computer Literacy - Classes are provided in basic computer skills 4 to 6 times per year. Classes can accomodate 10 students per session. Classes last for 6 weeks - software application 4 weeks. Emphasizes job-specific skills, vocabulary, and technology.
Be a tutor - Volunteer and schedule training.
Be an office worker - Provide administrative support for staff.
Be a Board of Directors member - Contribute your professional expertise to
a nonprofit organization during monthly meetings.
Be an Advisory Board member - Advise the staff and Board without a meeting commitment.
Be a special projects assistant - Share your knowledge and talents in a specific area with no meeting commitment.
Be a friend of literacy - Make a difference in America's future by funding efforts to promote adult literacy.
Be a reader at Fremont Street Nursery - Share your favorite children's book with the children of Fremont Street Nursery.
Be a supporter of Luminary/Spelling Bee or other fundraising efforts.
Be a United Way supporter - Please select #6111 on your pledge form.
