Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties

Organization's MISSION in the community:
To help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring!

SERVICES provided to the community:

Community-Based (Big Brother/Big Sister) Program

Screened and trained volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters are matched with a child who has like interests and geographic proximity.  Parent/guardian and child are interviewed as well, so a compatible match is made.  A few goals, such as increased self-confidence, are talked about with both the volunteer Big Brother Big Sister and the child.  Monthly contact is made with the parent, child, and volunteer by supervising Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members.  Big Brothers and Big Sisters in the program pick up their Little Brother or Little Sister at the child's home and spend 3-4 hours per week, usually at one specified day/time, hanging out doing a variety of activities in the community, including:  visiting the park, Youth Development Center, cooking meals at the Big's home, attending sporting events, or community events.  The goal is to build a solid relationship between a caring adult who can expand the child's horizons while working on improving social and emotional or other concerns as identified by parents.

School/Site Based Program

Screened and trained volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters meet their matched Little Brother or Little Sister at school during lunch or recess.  "Bigs" in this program only see "Littles" outside of school if the parent has approved of Big Brothers Big Sisters agency-sponsored activities.  The goals for the program are the same as the Community-Based Program as listed above.

VOLUNTEER Opportunities:

Community-Based Mentor Volunteers require 3-4 hours per week commitment.

School-Based Mentor Volunteers require 1 hour per week to mentor at the child's school.

Being a volunteer mentor doesn't take a lot of time or money, or you don't have to be a super hero.  It does take a passion for kids and a willingness to have fun.  Consider transforming the life of a child today!
