Organization's MISSION in the community:
To enable adults with disabilities to select, secure and sustain valued employment and training.
SERVICES provided in the community:
NW Works provides work opportunities for adults with disabilities. The inclusive program began thirty five years ago with a handful of adults and has since grown to serve over 160 adults per year. Opportunities for employment include on-site work in the WorkCenter, work at one of the offsite Enclave locations (in which a team of employees work at an employer's site), work for NW Works' community based janitorial company, or independent placement with a local employer. We provide training and employment to individuals who typically would be considered unemployable. The training, support, and long term follow along services enhance the skills of individuals so that even the most severely disabled individual can experience the pride of working and being successful in what they do.
VOLUNTEER Opportunities:
Work is an important part of most people's lives, and perhaps even more so for individuals with disabilities: work is one way for them to lead more normal lives to interact with co-workers, to build self esteem, to earn their own paycheck, and perhaps most importantly, to build an identity as a contributor to their community rather than someone who solely relies on others. Volunteering to work with our trainees can be most rewarding. If you want to make a difference, helping individuals reach their employment goals, then NW Works can use your talents. Your skills, interests and community connections can make all the difference in our workers' lives. No experience working with individuals with disabilities is necessary! We are always in need of volunteers who may want to spend a couple hours for a one day special project, quarterly with our "Friends of NW Works" where individuals from the community advise and give input or monthly as a member of the Executive Board of Directors.
NW Works has re-energized the volunteer program and is looking for individuals interested in lending their time and expertise on a regular basis at the facility. The volunteer program, spearheaded by Lynne Van Evera, will match your interests with those of the workers. For example, if you are good at crafts, or are willing to start a book club, or can help individuals learn a new task on the work floor, you are needed at the organization. We're not looking for "experts", but someone who has a few hours to spend at the center to make the programs exciting and special for the workers.
