History of the Volunteer Services

   Minimize

Our Health Inc., is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in the fall of 1999.  It grew out of a community planning and assessment process engaged by local leaders in 1997.  Although a relatively new organization, its accomplishments have been significant and represent a successful model for health and human service system development through strategic organizational partnerships.

Our Health has been cited as an innovative model for Virginia and the nation, driven by community based public-private partnerships with the goal of enhancing access to health and human services for the disadvantaged and underserved in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.  Examples of major activities carried out within this model include:  promotion and development of health and human services; service(s) coordination, creation of new programs and services; strategic infrastructure/organizational development; program/service outcome evaluation and measurement; and, coordinated healthcare needs assessments for special populations and hard to treat individuals with acute healthcare needs.

The intial phase of the development of Our Health focused principally on a capital campaign and construction of the Community Services Campus.  However, Our Health continues to place a strong emphasis on community building through collaboration with a focus on expanding programs and services among over 25 non-profit health and human service agencies and organizations.

In 2004, Our Health established the Volunteer Services Resource Center for the purpose of identifying, training, placing, and supporting volunteers for service with area non-profits agencies and organizations.  The center is currently a central resource for volunteerism in the community, connecting Our Health to Our Community
